Malnutrition Effect on Health

Man and animals cannot do without food since they need it to stay healthy and above all stay alive. Good food is of cause any substance which contains nutrients in the appropriate proportion, give energy, build antibodies that fight against diseases, repair worn-out cells, regulate and transport blood, encourage growth when ingested, absorbed and metabolized.

Nutritious food is that which contains the important nutrients in the diet (carbohydrate, protein, vitamin, fat, mineral salt, fiber, and water). Healthy nutrition requires that these nutrients must be found in the diet in order to be called a balance diet. As a food science and technologist I will like to announce that when a diet is not adequately balanced in the right proportion will result to what this article is to discuss: MALNUTRITION.

Malnutrition occurs when nutrient are not taken and utilized in the right amount. Most at time, people eat to fill their belly without minding what they eat, they don’t care to know if the diet is balanced or not, I have seen where people eat Noodles and bread, rice and yam, pap and bread; what an abuse of food combination. Malnutrition can occur in three ways which are:

(a)    Nutrient deficiency – consumption of a diet not properly balanced with the major nutrients in its right proportion result to malnutrition because the body lack nutrient needed to carry out activities and this can result to kwashiorkor.

(b)   It is also known that when the amount of nutrient excreted is greater than nutrient absorbed by the body, will also lead to malnutrition because the body does not absorb enough  and is left with little nutrient and this will lead to stunted growth, lack of immunities, low energy input and output etc.

(c)    Also, malnutrition can occur when nutrients are consumed in excess without caution and this can lead to obesity because the body will be gating just too much than is required.

Causes of Malnutrition
Malnutrition can be caused through the following ways;
(a)    Poverty: most people especially in the developing countries are poor and cannot afford the major nutrient needed to make a diet balanced; that is why kwashiorkor is more in the developing countries.

(b)   Junk food: though the poor are not the only ones expose to malnutrition the rich are not left out because they can afford anything the want, they buy a lot of junk food like ice-cream, meat pie, most don’t cook anymore because they believe they can buy the processed food and too much consumption of these food can cause health dieses like obesity.

(c)    Ignorance: most people are ignorant of the food they eat; some don’t even know the classes of foods or the nutrient to combine during food preparation. I met a man that said that it is only animals that eat vegetables and of cause this particular individual is ignorant to the nutrients found in vegetables. Some people skip meals believing that they can get all they need from one heavy meal eating without knowing that each meal plays its own role in the body. Also, most culture forbid some certain food

(d)   Family population: I have seen families with eleven children and others with lager numbers, my question is how will these children eat? They will without doubt be underfed because they don’t get quality diet. That is why family planning is encouraged so that it will help parents to plan for their children.

      Solution to malnutrition
(a)    Eating of balance diet

(b)   Educating people especially those in the developing countries on food combination

(c)    Encouraging family planning

(d)   Abusive eating of food should be avoided

Health Problem of Malnutrition

In the next edition I will be discussing two major problems that arise as a result of malnutrition which are:

(a)    Kwashiorkor

(b)   Obesity

Info on Obesity

Obesity is a nutritional disorder in which excessive body fat has accumulated more than the required quantity for a given age, weight and height.

Obesity is mostly noticed in the developed country because they do not lack the availability of food and food raw materials. Although, it is fast gaining a plus in the developing country especially among the rich, they assume that when their children are growing fat, is a sign of good health. This is a wrong conception, it is not a sign of good health rather it is malnutrition; an abuse of food which is actually harmful to health. Some career mothers don’t cook they always depend on the restaurant across the road for food for their families.

Obesity can occur at any age meaning that it also can be seen in children and even babies may be because they may be over fed or given more of junk food rather than properly cooked food. Obesity in children arises more from the consumption of calories food and not involving physical activities. In order to guide the size and weight of your body, we employ what is known as Body Mass Index ( BMI), which is a major of  weight to height ratio. Obesity though is not mostly caused by what we eat or lack of activity it can also be caused by genetic factor; meaning that it might be running through the family. Obesity has been given high degree of concentration these days because it has claimed a lot of lives and rendered some helpless.

BMI
It is expressed as weight to height ratio and allows us to recognize if we are underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese or severely obese.
BMI = weight (in kilogram)/height (centimeters)

Underweight < 18:4
Normal weight 18:5-24:9
Overweight 25:0-29:9
Obese 30:0-39:9
Severely obese >40:0

Some health risk associated with obesity may include
         *      Type 2 diabetes
         *      Hypertension
         *      Dyslipidemia
         *      Heart disease
         *      Gallbladder disease
         *      Menstrual irregularities
         *      Bronchitis
         *      Abdominal hernia
         *      When these diseases are prevalent, it can be fatal; can lead to untimely death.

Prevention of obesity

Restrict calories intake
Say no to anything called junk food. Do more of cooking than fast food; snacks-burger, ice cream, biscuit, meat pie etc. Take more of water instead of soft drink or alcohol. Sometimes skip heavy meals. Eat more of fruits and vegetables.

Physical activities and exercise
Overweight can actually make one sluggish and lazy so try to be involved in daily house chores. Exercise is one of the easiest way to burn fat. Do simple exercises like jugging, walking, skipping just to mention but few. You can also register at a gymnastic center but don’t do strenuous exercise that can cause breakdown, so do the one that suits you.

Nutritional and medical help
You can seek a nutritional consultant that will give you a dietary time table. There are medical remedies for obesity; drugs and surgery. But it is always advisable to employ the natural method of reducing or avoiding being overweight.

Overcoming Snoring-Causes, Consequences And Remedies/Cuntrols of Snoring

Snoring occurs when one breath noisily through the nose and mouth while sleeping. There are lots of factors that make one snore while sleeping, however if these factors are tackled then snoring will be taken care of and the sufferer will certainly have a good rest/sleep.

Causes
     1.       People snore when the fatty tissue relaxes and
          blocks the air passage.
     2.       Cold, catarrh  and other sinus infection
     3.       Exposure to dust, smoke and elegies
     4.       Fatness (obesity)
     5.       Stress

Consequences
Restlessness during sleep is the major result of snoring. Snoring may have direct or indirect impart on neighbors and family members. There was a case study somewhere around the western world of a family that was almost torn apart because the husband snores. They wife was already asking for divorce because she said she can’t take it any longer. The man was made to sleep in the parlor and the rest of the family members in the bedrooms. Until they found help and the situation was rescued.

Remedy/Control
The sufferer should always sleep by the side it will prevent the fatty tissue from blocking the passage of air. A big pillow can be placed to prevent the person from rolling over.

Treat cold, catarrh and other sinus infection promptly and avoid further degeneration. Catarrh and cold do usually block the passage of air along the air ways. This will certainly result to noisy breath since it will be almost impossible to breath through the nose promptly.

Avoid staying close to smoke and dusty environment since these can cause sinus discharge (runny nose). If you must stay in a dusty or smoky use nostril air filter to prevent direct inhalation. If you are allergic to certain environment or object then avoid frequent contact.

Take enough time to rest and don’t overwork yourself. Working hard is good but stressing out yourself may make you have a restless and noisy breath sleep. Kill that stress.

Watch your weight in case you are obese or you are fat and it is interfering with you breathing when you sleep. Obesity has a very dangerous effect on any individual. (See my post on obesity)

Simple ways to handle Diabetes

Most people cannot do without taking a bottle of soft drink in each meal, when served with water will not be able to finish a glass but can go for three to four bottles of soft drink or any other drink in a day. The rate at which people are not careful with what they eat and drink is a serious issue; someone who wants to take pap, they will sweeten with lots of cubes of sugar, ho! What a deadly habit. Too much intake of sugar can actually result in some complication that will result in too much sugar in the blood. This write up will expose all you need to know about this silent killer diabetes. Enjoy and stay healthy.

What is diabetes mellitus?
 Diabetes mellitus is simply defined as the increase in the level of blood sugar. And this can be because the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or once cells cannot react to the insulin that has been produced by the pancreas. and the unset of these can result to frequent urination, high thirst to replace what has left the body, increase in your appétit for food, weight loss, bladder infection, high blood pressure etc. there is also complication that arises from prolong diabetes and this may include:

Skin infection

Eye infection

Nerve infection

Kidney disease

High blood pressure

Ulcer

Foot infection

Cancer etc

Three main types of diabetes are:
(a)    Juvenile-onset diabetes (type 1 diabetes) this is mostly found in children, young adult and adolescents and is results from auto-immune destruction of the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas. In the type 1 diabetes, the production of insulin reduces and completely ceases. People that suffers from this type of diabetes needs the injection of insulin daily so that it can help to control the level of glucose in the blood, if this injection is not administered the person will surely die.

(b)   Non-insulin dependent diabetes (type 2 diabetes) this is found in 85% of individuals and is cause by two reasons which are: reduction in insulin secretion and also a decrease in its activity on the liver and muscles. This is normally called insulin resistance. One of the major disorder that can arise as a result of these is OBESITY meaning that people with this kind should try as much as possible to limit the intake of fat ant also control their nutritional habit.

(c)    Gestational diabetes this type of diabetes is mostly noticed during pregnancy when the individual has high blood glucose, it usually disappears after pregnancy put the person is at risk of type 2 diabetes later years to come.

How to prevent diabetes
Try as much as you can to reduce the in take of juice, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, processed food.

Engage in physical exercise so that you will burn off excess fat.

Eat foods that are high in fiber like fruits, vegetables, whole grains etc.

Make water your best drink.

Avoid fried foods and eat cholesterol free food.

Avoid too much of carbohydrate foods.

Test yourself to know if you are at risk

Make sure you take your drugs as prescribed by the doctor.

Don’t miss your appointment date.

Take your doctors advice very seriously and practices them.

Simple Ways To Handle Cholera

Cholera is a bacteria infection caused by the ingestion of food or water that has been contaminated by bacterium vibrio cholerae. Cholera should never be over looked because it has quietly claimed a lot of lives which include little children, adults and even babies. Cholera is mostly noticed among people who live in an unhealthy environment (houses in slum areas, close to refuse dumps, or residential areas that lack basic infrastructural amenities).

Primary symptom
People suffering from cholera are known to stool frequently (severe watery diarrhea) and also vomiting which of cause leads to dehydration due to the fact that they have lost a lot of water and when neglected can lead to death. Also people having cholera have sunken eyes because they become very weak and they also have swollen stomach caused by the infection of the small intestine, abdominal cramp and headache.

Prevention and control
Cholera can only be controlled by good personal and environmental hygiene and these include the provision of clean safe water to the public and also proper food handling and processing. Water should be properly boiled, allowed to cool then filtered before drinking. Cans and bottles used to store water should be properly washed pre-pasturerised before use. Fruits and vegetables should be properly washed before eating. Hands should be washed after visiting the rest room and before eating. Food should be well handled both in our homes and canteens, and food handlers should be free from the disease. Baby plates, spoons, water bottles etc should be carefully and neatly handled with care. House should be perfectly kept clean to prevent flees also residential areas should be far away from stagnant water, slum areas and refuse dump.

Treatment

Once cholera is suspected, the victim should be given oral rehydration (salt and water solution) and then should be taken to the hospital immediately for treatment – the use of vaccines.

How to Mange Puberty (Girls and Boys)

Puberty Done Right

Definition of Puberty
Puberty is a developmental stage that is experienced by the body of a child when the body starts transforming into an adult body; during the stages of puberty a boy child start transforming gradually into a man while the girl child starts developing into a woman. Meaning that a child at a certain age will start developing their sexual organs and when fully developed is able to conceive children in future.

Ages of puberty varies in every child because of their different ways of growth, some might start experiencing puberty at their early age while some at their teenage age. Puberty I will say is a gift to every child because when a child did not develop these sexual organs then bringing forth kids to the world will be as good as impossible.

Puberty in a girl child
Girls are known to start maturity faster than the boys some may start noticing these changes as early as 8 years old. The time for puberty varies depending on some factors like family gene, food etc. some families are known to have rapid growth and a child born into that family will start developing into an adult at a very tender age.  Also, the way in which a child feeds will also effect growth that is why most children that eat more of junk foods mature very faster than normal. When a girl child starts experiencing puberty she gradually develop into a woman and the shape, body size and height that she will gain will absolutely depend on what I have explained earlier.

Some changes that take place in a girl child during puberty
  • Shooting out of the breasts in which one of the breasts is noticed to be bigger than the other
  • Growing of hair in the armpit
  • Growing of hair in the pubic area
  • Widening of the hip
  • The buttocks get bigger
  • She start having monthly periods which is also known as menstrual flow
  • She start being moody at times
  • She starts having pimples
  • She feels sexual urge easily

How to cope and live healthy with puberty changes as a girl
  • Take your bath regularly and always use antiseptic in your bath water especially during your period
  • Wash your underwear with clean water, rinse well and spread under the sun
  • Change your menstrual pad twice or three times a day depending on the type of flow if heavy or light flow this is to avoid infection and discomfort
  • Sleep in a well ventilated and comfortable room
  • Eat healthy meals especially fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid staying too close with the opposite sex
  • Read more books on puberty
  • Talk to your parents or health care provider if necessary
  • Be happy that you are gradually becoming a woman

Puberty in a boy child
Boys do not experience puberty as early as the girls do, a boy might start undergoing developmental changes as from 14 – 16 years of age. His body gradually starts transforming to that of a man, the size, shape, height his body will maintain will also depend on his family gene and also the food he feeds on.

Changes a boy experiences during puberty are
  • Rapid increase in height
  • Muscle building
  • Enlargement of the penis and testicles
  • Growth of hair on the upper and lower lips, cheeks and chin
  • Some grow hair on the chest
  • Hair grows in the armpit
  • Hair grows in the pubic areas around the genitals
  • You start having cracked or deep voice
  • Might have pimples
  • Starts getting erections
  • You start experiencing wet dreams

How to cope and live healthy with the changes
  • You sweat more often so shower more often and use perfume on your clothe
  • Shave your armpit and use shore
  •  Shave your bears to look good
  •  Wear neat underwear
  •  Wear pants or bowers to help package the testis and penis
  •  Eat healthy food so that your body will be properly built
  •  Wet dreams should not border you, just take your bath and wash and spread the bed sheet
  •   Building your muscles by taking a walk or jogging
  •   Talk to your parents and health care provider if necessary
Advise to parents on puberty
Teach your children about puberty when you think that they are of age. Guide them properly and don’t allow them to learn this from elsewhere, teach them sex education and don’t shy away from it. Encourage them to be happy with the changes that they are undergoing and tell them the reason why these changes are important to them.

How to Remedy Lack Of Sexual Drive (Libido Decline) In Female

Lack or decline in libido is common among women in mid-life. Even worse, there are reports of cycling women who have lost their drive for sex.

Bored woman in bed with spouse

Healthy libido is important to the emotional and psychological fitness of a woman and her relationships. A decline in libido is not a medical problem and therefore should be remedied only except if a medical problem causes the lowering in the sex drive, so it is wise to determine the cause of a low or lack of libido.

What are the causes of decline or lack of libido?
There are numerous reasons a woman may experience low libido. Some of these reasons are enumerated as follow:

Varying levels of hormones – Libido-controlling hormones can a change because of pregnancy, childbirth and age especially for menopausal women. Sickness can also cause hormonal imbalance.

Stress – when a woman is stressed, she will certainly experience decline in libido, because she needs herself to be in the mood. Lifestyle can cause hormonal issues and bring on excess stress or depression. You also may just be too tired to think about sex. Make sure you get about 8 hours of sleep each night, eat a balanced diet, drink adequate water (aim for 7 to 8 cups each day) and exercise regularly.

Emotional issues – women easily get emotional; so in a house whereby she is abused physically and verbally trust me she easily loss libido.

Weight Change – Obesity or excessive weight gain can also lead to decline in libido.

Alcoholism and drug abuse – quite common, and are very deadly too.

Medications can also drop libido – the birth control pill can alter your sex drive as well so it is with some other medication. In that case it may just be temporary but you can talk to your doctor or discontinue the use or find an alternative.

If your libido lowers for several days and then returns to normal, it is probably just a temporary change in hormones or stress. If you have been suffering from a low libido for several weeks or longer, you will have to make some changes to restore your libido.

How to restore your libido.
Restore your hormonal balance – Get blood work done to determine testosterone levels. If testosterone (a hormone that triggers sexual desire) levels are too low, you may feel lack of sexual desire. In that case see a doctor to prescribe the appropriate amount to get your libido on track. Testosterone treatment is administered by an injection of testosterone or a patch of hormones worn and absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream you may also consider using progesterone cream. When the sex hormone progesterone (the counter-hormone of estrogen) levels are too low, a decrease in libido can result. Progesterone cream can be applied topically on the genitals to increase libido. But caution is needful; testosterone treatment has many side effects. It can cause unwanted hair growth, weight gain and skin problems, such as acne.
